Neura Robotics raises $1.4B to scale cognitive humanoid robots

Neura Robotics, a German cognitive robotics company founded by David Reger, has raised $1.4 billion, with American strategic investors participating in the round. The company builds humanoid and mobile manipulator robots paired with what Reger calls a "physical AI brain" — and the raise is one of the largest in physical AI to date.

The biggest breakthrough we see right now is actually connecting to a brain and with more sensing capabilities. The product logic

Reger's core argument is that vision-language-action models, which most competitors are focused on, aren't enough to bring robots into real-world environments. The gap isn't processing power or visual recognition — it's the absence of a nervous system. A robot needs reflexes and physical adaptability, not just a brain trained on video data. That distinction shapes the company's hardware strategy: Neura builds across multiple embodiments, with mobile manipulators as the current primary form factor, not just humanoids.

The humanoid push is real but gradual. Reger's case is that the built world is designed around human dimensions, which gives humanoid form factors a long-run structural advantage. For now, the nearer-term commercial focus is European industrial clients — particularly automotive suppliers facing cost pressure and a projected shortfall of 7 million workers in Europe by 2030.

Neuragym

The $1.4B raise is funding, in part, a global network of training facilities called Neuragym. The logic is that physical AI lacks the equivalent of internet-scale text data — it has to be generated in the real world. Reger's plan is to build Neuragym sites in every major city, giving companies a place to train and fine-tune robots on physical tasks before deploying them. Data transfers directly to robots in the field with one click. It's infrastructure-first: build the data pipeline before the model can scale.

Supply chain and US expansion

Neura is currently drawing on the Stuttgart industrial cluster — Bosch, Porsche, Mercedes, Audi — converting automotive-grade components for robotics use. The practical challenge is that automotive sensors are certified for around 6,000 hours while robots need components rated to 40,000 hours. Reger expects the supply chain to globalise over time, with production eventually in both the US and Asia, but Europe is the current anchor.

The US investor base in this round signals the next move. Reger is expanding the company's US office, and positions the raise explicitly as a partnership with investors who know how to scale at the pace the current moment demands. His framing is that nothing significant has come out of Germany since the automotive industry — and Neura intends to change that.
