The safety logic behind the aesthetics
Gaston's case for the demonic aesthetic is functional: humanoid robots are disarming in a way that makes them more dangerous, not less. Underneath the skin of any modern humanoid is roughly the equivalent of 20 drill presses linked together, driven by machine learning. Gaston wants people near his machine to treat it the way they'd treat a factory floor — backs to the wall, alert. The horns and aggressive form factor are, in his framing, caution tape you can't ignore.

Gaston's thesis is that the first genuinely useful robots will be stronger than humans but lower on precision and intelligence — brawn before dexterity.
The chainsaw arm runs two degrees of freedom. Rather than the VR-gloves-and-biped approach used by humanoid teleoperation systems, Gaston controls the top half more like an excavator, parking the quad body and steering the working arm on two planes. The four-leg platform keeps actuators nearly three feet off the ground, well clear of debris and terrain hazards that would compromise ankle-level electronics on a biped.
Why four legs, not two or wheels
Bipeds concentrate electronics at ankle height and push the center of gravity up into the torso. Gaston argues that even the best teams building bipeds rely heavily on curation in what they show publicly. Wheels require suspension — which introduces unknown spring forces — and tracks are heavy and surprisingly unstable at small scales. Four legs avoid all three problems and handle uneven forest terrain in ways the alternatives can't.
Where this actually sits
Gaston is clear this is a passion project, not a stealth startup. The viral moment inflated some of the rescue-robot framing; his actual ambition is narrower and more personal — a machine useful for the kind of physical, dangerous outdoor work he already does. The most unexpected inbound since the video spread has come from police departments asking whether it could be deployed for public safety situations, an application Gaston hadn't been targeting.
The project traces back to a 2019 MIT paper by Ben Katz and Jared Di Carlo on a quasi-direct-drive actuator costing around $700 — the open-sourced building block behind much of the current wave of affordable quadruped and humanoid development. Gaston started his current design around 2022.
