Stripe launches agentic commerce protocol with OpenAI — buy products inside ChatGPT starting today

Sep 29, 2025 with Jeff Weinstein

Key Points

  • Stripe and OpenAI launch in-chat purchasing in ChatGPT, letting US consumers buy physical goods from Etsy and soon Shopify without leaving the app.
  • The companies co-developed an open Agentic Commerce Protocol to let merchants express checkout flows that AI agents can initiate and complete at scale.
  • Etsy's stock jumps 15.83% on the news as discovery and purchase intent converge inside large language models, sidestepping Apple's in-app purchase tax by focusing initially on physical goods.

Summary

Stripe and OpenAI have launched in-chat purchasing inside ChatGPT, making it possible for US consumers to buy physical products directly within a conversation, effective September 29, 2025. The integration uses payment credentials already saved to a ChatGPT subscription, with no redirect to an external site required.

Etsy is live at launch, with Shopify confirmed as coming soon. Both represent the first ecommerce platforms integrated into ChatGPT's native commerce layer. Etsy's stock rose 15.83% on the news, lifting its market cap to approximately $7.42 billion.

The architecture rests on two new technical foundations. The first is the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard co-developed by Stripe and OpenAI, purpose-built to let merchants programmatically express their checkout flows in a form AI agents can initiate and complete. It is available at agenticcommerce.dev. The second is a Shared Payment Token API, which enables Stripe merchants and merchants on other payment processors to accept agentic payments securely.

Stripe's Jeff positions the protocol as distinct from MCP, despite sharing its open and LLM-first principles. The distinction matters operationally: checkout flows involve inventory states, SKU management, coupon logic, and payment failure handling that generic tool-use protocols are not designed to manage.

The initial rollout is limited to physical goods and is live on web, iOS, and Android for US ChatGPT users. That scope sidesteps the Apple in-app purchase tax, which applies to digital goods sold through iOS apps. How digital goods will be handled in future expansions remains unaddressed.

The broader commercial thesis is that discovery and purchase intent are converging inside large language models. Stripe frames the protocol as the infrastructure layer needed to move agentic commerce from prototype scale to production scale, with merchants able to participate without requiring agents to simulate browser navigation on their existing sites.
