Jameson Detwiler is building what he calls the ideal second car — a four-seat, street-legal electric low-speed vehicle designed to replace the golf cart and eventually operate as a fully autonomous errand-runner. The vehicle, priced at an estimated $15,000 MSRP, tops out at 25 mph and carries 100 miles of range per charge, placing it firmly in the low-speed vehicle category (FMVSS 500), which permits road use on any surface road posted at 35 mph or under.

Detwiler spent 18 months building the current prototype, starting by importing a small Chinese EV, tearing it down to the chassis, and replacing the drivetrain, battery, and most major components. The vehicle is four feet, eleven inches wide and roughly 10.5 feet long, seats four in a dining-table configuration, uses four in-wheel motors for all-wheel drive, and is already street-registered. Chip targets 10 production units within four months.

Detwiler: 'Golf carts escaped golf communities during the pandemic and the growth area has been young families in Sunbelt regions. For me, I live in Miami — I'm not gonna put my kids into a golf cart. It's not safe. But I like the idea.' On pricing: 'Our cars are $15,000 estimated MSRP for four seats, top speed 25 miles an hour, 100 miles of range per charge.' Production units expected in four months.

Autonomous parking, not full self-driving

The autonomy pitch is deliberately narrow. Rather than highway FSD, Chip's first autonomous feature is valet-style parking: a passenger hops out, the vehicle parks itself, then returns on command via calendar integration or text. Today that's achieved through direct human remote control rather than onboard AI, which Detwiler frames as both a data-gathering phase and a cleaner regulatory path. The plan is to run a pilot in Miami this winter, validate safety at lower speeds on less busy roads, and migrate from remote control toward full unsupervised autonomy over time. A longer-term use case he describes is autonomous grocery pickup — the frunk opens, the vehicle speaks to a curbside employee, and the order loads without a driver present.

Target customer and market positioning

Detwiler's stated ICP is young families in Sunbelt markets who want the convenience of a golf cart but won't put their kids in one. Miami, where Chip is based, is the launch market. The vehicle's boxy, retro-futurist aesthetic — deliberately Pixar-adjacent — is a conscious product decision: Detwiler says he wants the form to signal that this is not a 60 mph car, and he frames the brand more like a sneaker and culture company than an auto manufacturer. Customization is central: the seats fold into a truck bed, L-track accessory rails are standard, and optional add-ons include a surf rack, soft top, hard doors, full HVAC, and seat heating and cooling.

Competitive framing

Detwiler argues that incumbent automakers are structurally unable to compete here — tied to high-margin products and incompatible engineering, sales, and marketing motions. He points to the Ford Think from roughly 25 years ago as evidence that large OEMs have visited this category and retreated. The VP of vehicle engineering came to Chip from Canoo, where he led the line and began his career in seating and restraints — an area Detwiler describes as one of the harder industrial design problems in the vehicle.

The golf cart category is his clearest displacement target. The major manufacturers have offered minimal customization and, in Detwiler's view, have been asleep on safety — a category he describes as severely under-regulated with a documented injury problem. Chip designs to crash standards appropriate for its operating speed and is building active safety features using the vehicle's onboard cameras.

At $15,000, the vehicle does not compete directly with a used Honda Civic on price-per-mile for freeway commuters. The bet is that in dense coastal and Sunbelt markets, where 25 mph on surface roads often matches congested freeway speeds, and where a second car is used for short, lifestyle-oriented trips, the combination of form, function, and autonomous parking justifies the purchase on its own terms.
