K2 Space raises $500M on the back of its first giant satellite mission

K2 Space has closed a $500 million round after successfully flying its first giant satellite, a mission the company calls Dramatost. The satellite has been in orbit for 120 days, and Kunjur says it proved the company could execute on the hardest technical problems. The round coincides with K2 crossing $1 billion in signed contracts.

Falcon 9, not Starship

When K2 launched in June 2022, the founding pitch was built around Starship — designing the largest satellite physically possible for that fairing. Kunjur is candid that the timeline assumptions were wrong; the deck projected monthly Starship launches by 2024. Early advisors pushed the team to hedge, and K2 pivoted to Falcon 9 compatibility. All $1 billion in signed contracts are tied to Falcon 9 launches.

We just announced a $500,000,000 round. We started K2, we want to build giant satellites. Since the last time we talked in December, we flew our first giant satellite. We called the mission Dramatost, and it's gone well. We're one hundred and twenty days in. We proved that we could do a lot of really hard things, and this round comes on the back of that. We also crossed a billion dollars in signed contracts.

Customer mix

The commercial-government split is roughly 50/50 by design. The first major contract announced this year covers 30 satellites for commercial delivery in 2028. The second is a partnership with Anduril on Golden Dome, a national security program. Kunjur frames the dual-track as intentional, building a platform performant enough for both mission types rather than cycling between them.

Power as the organizing thesis

Power output is Kunjur's central metric for the satellite platform. It determines communications throughput, signal strength, and how much compute a satellite can host. The company name references the Kardashev scale — K2 for a Type II civilization able to harness stellar-scale energy. Kunjur notes that four years ago he had to explain what Kardashev meant; now it's common vocabulary in the space industry.

On the thermal management problem that critics raise against orbital data centers, Kunjur argues it's an engineering challenge rather than a physics barrier at the 100-kilowatt satellite class — solvable with existing technology over the next five years, before more exotic science becomes necessary.

Starship's long-term role

Kunjur's model for Starship, once it matures, is proliferation — roughly 50 large satellites per launch — rather than single massive payloads. Exceptions might include very large military assets or giant telescopes, where in-space assembly, as demonstrated with the ISS, is a viable path.

Structural pull on launch

Kunjur draws a parallel to how hyperscalers think about frontier AI models: once you realize you're entirely dependent on one external provider, the strategic risk becomes uncomfortable. The same logic is now driving capital into launch vehicles. Companies building orbital infrastructure are creating a commercial incentive to fund competing launch providers that simply didn't exist five to ten years ago, outside of SpaceX.
