Impulse Space has added a $308 million extension to its Series D, bringing the total round to $808 million ($500 million initial close plus the extension). Mueller says the capital will fund continued hiring across all levels and facility expansion to support higher production rates.

The company makes spacecraft that take over where launch vehicles leave off. Mira handles precision orbital maneuvering — two Mira spacecraft recently completed a flyby, coming within 200 meters of each other. Helios is an upper stage that rides inside a fairing and can carry large payloads to high-energy destinations including geostationary orbit, the moon, and Mars. Mueller describes it as "a rocket on a rocket."

We just got onboarded to NSSL for Helios, which is the national space launch lane, which allows us to fly the US government, which is the biggest customer in the world for launch. And we'll be the only upper stage that's on that program now.

Government wins

Two near-term contracts sharpen the commercial picture. Impulse signed a Victus Solo follow-on with the US Space Force for two additional Mira spacecraft. More significantly, Helios has been onboarded to the National Space Security Launch (NSSL) lane — the program that serves the US government, which Mueller calls the biggest launch customer in the world. Impulse is currently the only upper stage on the program.

AI adoption, with constraints

Mueller acknowledges using AI tools for quick engineering lookups, citing a recent example of querying Grok for baseline seat pressure on a Vespel valve seat and getting an answer in seconds. Software engineers at Impulse use it more extensively. The harder problem is that classified programs and ITAR restrictions limit which models the company can access, and Mueller says he's "a little worried about getting left behind" relative to tech companies that carry no such constraints.

Hiring

Impulse is hiring aggressively, drawing from universities, other industries, and its Colorado office, where guidance, navigation, and control work is based. The tightest market is software engineers, a premium that has existed since the company's founding and has only intensified as AI draws talent. Senior-level hires across the board are harder to find than junior ones.

The NSSL slot is the number that matters most here. Access to the US government's highest-priority launch lane, with no competing upper stage on the program, positions Helios as the default option for national security missions that need to reach deep-space or high-energy orbits.
